Business Consultant - Public Sector to Social Enterprise Growth (Remote Working) - Based Anywhere
Up to 50,000 plus a bonus related to personal & company performance + Car or Allowance

We are a fast-growing business. We exist to help change the UK public sector by supporting those stepping out of the public sector into independent social businesses. Our role is to work alongside public sector teams to turn this dream into reality.

Weve an enviable reputation for leading the way in this space, both as practitioners and thought-leaders. Weve already worked with over 30 organisations. Weve written a book How to Step Out which is now the industry bible.

There are three of us, including the founding MD, Craig Dearden-Phillips MBE. Were now ready to recruit as we seek to grow further in the coming year.

So what do we need? Essentially we need an experienced person who can deliver successfully to both our public sector clients and deal with our Associate base of independent consultants. The projects themselves are varied and complex you might be asked to lead on writing a business plan, conducting a readiness assessment or delivering commercial advice to a new social business so it can grow profitably.

Because we use an Associate base to draw in specialist skills or knowledge, it is important that our core people are good all-rounders. Therefore we expect strong finance, project management, marketing and business planning skills. And we would, as a matter of course, want to see some of your previous work and client testimony as part of this process.

This is an entrepreneurial company. What you earn will be linked closely to individual and company performance. You will also have the option to use the whole or part of any bonus youre entitled to buy in to the stock of the company in order to have a personal share in our success.

About Us:

We are a two year old company with a simple mission: to help more social businesses grow out of the UK public sector. We are seeking to become the best company in the UK doing this and so far weve established a great brand, a fantastic reputation for delivery and, through our new book (How to Step Out) were now viewed as thought-leaders in our field.

Why are we here? This company is founded on a powerful vision for a changed public sector landscape in which we have played a contributing role both in terms of our thinking and practice. Our medium-term plan is to grow a business which is big enough it make an impact on this emerging space but small enough to retain its ethos and character as a business.

What is our ethos? This is a professional and commercial but also very friendly and caring business - we are about more than profit. To this end, we donate 20% of all profit net of tax and reinvestment requirement directly to our Foundation which in turn donates it to entrepreneur-led social ventures. Examples include Lofty Heights, Music in Business, Social Adventures, TW Willis Foundation, Green Lights Trust, FreeCycle Fenland, Suffolk School for Social Entrepreneurs.

Our work is project-based working predominantly with Councils and the NHS to develop business cases for internal departments to set up as independent new businesses. We also have a growing roster of stepped out clients who we are helping to improve and grow.

The role of Consultant will lead on particular projects both directly delivering with clients and overseeing the work of our associates.

Joining our small but committed core staff team (currently there are 3 full time employees) you will have client-management responsibilities and there will be an expectation on you to build sales with your existing clients where this is possible.

This is what we will be looking for evidence of when it comes to reviewing performance:

1. First class direct work with public sector clients on proposals for establishing effective and sustainable social businesses, or to support new social businesses to develop their culture and performance.

2. Optimally profitable, on-time project management on business plans, tenders, consultancy assignments - that you lead on are delivered profitably and that delivery is well-planned.

3. Great relationships with clients and Associates.

4. Added value to help develop this business a genuine contribution to the strategy and good-functioning of the business

5. New business by producing tenders, pitches, pricing them and gaining follow-on business from new clients.

The Person we are looking for will need to show us that they have:

1. Quality - Have worked to an exceptional standard as a consultant and managed others to deliver complex projects.
2. Acumen - Are financially and commercially capable of developing business plans, financial models and advice on overall business improvement.
3. Values - Share our commitment to making to wider public service reform, and operating as a socially-entrepreneurial company.
4. Gravitas - Are an accomplished handler of clients and are capable of generating follow-on business.
5. Breadth - Possess a reasonable understanding of a wide range of specialist areas e.g. finance, company law, HR, OD, IT, Ops Management..
6. Experience - of working with the public sector

The Package:

> We offer a first-year salary up to 50k and a profit related bonus up to 10k, depending on overall company performance.
> We also offer use of a company vehicle or a cash equivalent - as part of this package once the probation period is over.
> Share opportunity

The appointment will be contingent on the passing of a Probation Period of six months following which the appointment will be confirmed as permanent.

Place of Work:

> This is flexible
> There is no PA support in place so the Consultant must be self-servicing.
> The postholder needs to be able to travel throughout England on a regular basis including regular internal meetings in London - so must hold a valid UK Drivers Licence.
> 40 p/w with 25 days weeks paid holiday plus Bank Holidays.
